Thousands of Teenagers In California Are Pre-registered To Vote

According to Alex Padilla, 100,000 teenagers in California are pre-registered to vote. Alex stated that this is a big milestone. This program will automatically activate the registration when the person turns 21. Ten percent of the pre-registrations have been done within the last few weeks.

Padilla stated that the number of pre-registrations increased drastically after the Parkland shooting. Forty-three percent of the students are not affiliated with any political party. Thirty-eight percent of the people are registered with the Democratic party. Ten percent of the students are registered with the Republican party.

Not only are more teenagers pre-registering to vote, they are also participating in civic engagement opportunities. There is a state website that allows people to participate in student poll mock programs and mock elections.

People in California can start pre-registering at the age of 16. You must be a resident of California and a citizen of the United States. You must also not be convicted of a felony. Additionally, you must not have been found mentally incompetent in court.

Teens who are interested in pre-registering to vote can fill out an application online. You will need to provide your date-of-birth, the last four of your Social Security number and your California states ID or driver's license. The Department of Motor Vehicles will be able to access this information and get a copy of your signature. If you do not have a state ID or driver's license, then you can complete an online interview to complete the registration.

You will be able to check the status of your registration within 24 hours of registering. If have questions about the process of pre-registering to vote, then you will need to contact the Secretary of State voter line at 1-800-345-8683.
