San Francisco 49ers To Get Boost on Defense.

The San Francisco 49ers are running dangerously close to becoming the NFL team that has the biggest off-season glow-up, but they'll have to outdo the Cleveland Browns who appear to be shaking up the entire league. With a franchise QB under center, San Francisco is reportedly turning to their defense in order to make key additions to their roster. Among those key additions heading up to the draft, the 49ers are allegedly talking to star cornerback Richard Sherman who was recently cut loose by the Seattle Seahawks.

Richard Sherman is probably one of the most high-profile free agents currently sitting on the market and his release from Seattle merited immediate attention from just about every team in the league. Sherman was still playing at a high level when an achilles injury ended his season in Seattle early. Seattle's focus this offseason has seemingly been all about turning away from their veteran players, the vaunted Legion of Boom, and instead toward the future. Sherman, along with Michael Bennett, were two quick casualties of the franchise shake-up.

Sherman, at only 31 years old, could potentially have a lot left in the tank for a team that is willing to gamble on him. san Francisco is seemingly in a position where they feel they can afford to pay for a veteran who might not be on the team even two or three years from today. Sherman will have to prove his health, first, but reports are already alluding that Sherman is a favorite to land a deal with San Francisco. In fact, San Francisco is allegedly putting a three-year offer on the table provided that Sherman can prove that he is healthy enough to keep competing on the team.

Richard Sherman, healthy, would immediately ascend to the top of San Francisco's starting cornerback spots. Sherman has won four Pro Bowls and three All-Pro nominations throughout his career. Sherman currently leads the NFL in interceptions since he was drafted in 2011 and his 99 pass deflections also leads the entire NFL. San Francisco has a ton of money sitting in their bank account, even after retaining star QB Jimmy Garroppolo, and a veteran like Sherman could end up making a whole lot of sense. We'll have to sit and wait to see if the 49ers make the jump but right now all reports are leaning toward this becoming a reality for Sherman and the 49ers.
