Have a Passion for Fashion? Explore Your Creative Side at Academy of Art University.

What kind of person even considers a career in the arts or fashion? Is it only a special breed, or those with connections within the industry? How about a Captain in the United States Marine Corps? Or a scientist? Or a retail manager? Or high country backpacking guide? If you always thought a working class background could never fit into a world of fashion or art, or find success and fulfillment there, you are mistaken. Just ask Eden Slezin.

After more than eighteen years of career-hopping, including all the roles mentioned above, Eden was inspired while on a trip to Rio de Janeiro to create a line of men's clothing. While the inspiration came from his experiences overseas, the training that made his dream possible was acquired deep in the heart of San Francisco, California. "Once I found my passion," Eden stated, "I set out to master the craft by enrolling in the Fashion Design MFA degree program at Academy of Art University."

From Running Experiments to the New York Runway

While Eden Slezin's journey to a career in fashion may not be typical, he insists on using his years of career-hopping to his advantage. Coupling his life experiences with the superior training he received at Academy of Art University, Eden's designs incorporate vintage military denim, recycled bicycle tire tubes and sustainable materials, including organic twill, repurposed cotton and naturally dyed denim. Just as he has reinvented himself over the years, Eden seeks to give ordinary materials another chance as extraordinary pieces of clothing. He says, "It is the ultimate expression of who I am as a designer."

Eden's work at the Academy, along with his skill and dedication to his craft, impressed department faculty, who selected him and eight fellow student designers to debut their collections during New York Fashion Week. The School of Fashion at Academy of Art University held its 21st runway showcase on September 9, 2017 at Skylight Clarkson Square in New York City. In addition, Eden was selected for the CFDA Fashion Future Graduate Showcase and as a finalist for the CFDA Elaine Gold Launch Pad during the festivities. Eden claims, "Academy of Art has allowed me to transition from a career I was not that excited about, to my dream career of being a fashion designer."

According to a write-up featuring his runway work during fashion week in The Huffington Post, "Eden used organic denim donated from Cone Denim, extra fabrics from Amour Vert and recycled rubber bike tubes from Sports Basement to support sustainability in fashion." Eden further expostulates about his work: “I like the idea of creating one-of-a-kind pieces out of items that literally have been thrown in the trash. It’s very satisfying to take every day, overlooked objects and transform them into something elevated, something special.”
