Gas Prices In California Are Rising

Gas Prices

Californians can expect to pay more at the pump starting Wednesday, November 1, 2017. This is when a new gas tax will take effect. The cost of gasoline will rise by 12 cents. The cost of diesel fuel will rise by 16 cents.

This gas tax will help generate $52 million in revenue for the state. The money will be used to fund public transit, road programs and traffic congestion projects. The goal is to make sure that 98 percent of the roads in California are in good condition by the year 2027.

This tax is not the only way that the pockets of Californians will be hit. Californians will have to pay an annual fee for their car on January 1, 2018. The fee is contingent upon the value of your car. In 2020, people who have an electric car will have to pay an extra $100 per year.

This is not a new tax. There are 20 states who have already adopted this gas tax. It is important to note that the 12 cents tax increase may not be seen right away. Marie Montgomery is the spokeswoman for the Automobile Club of Southern California. She is concerned about the rising cost of gas.

She stated that she would not be surprised if every gas stations raised their prices by November 1. California has always had the highest gas prices in the country. Despite the fact that Californians are used to the high gas prices, most of them are opposed to the gas tax.

A poll that was taken by the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley showed that 58 percent of them are opposed to the gas tax. Thirty-nine percent of them are strongly opposed to the gas tax. Brian Kelly, who is the California Transportation Secretary, believes that the higher gas tax is necessary. He stated that this tax will help fix the pot holes in the road without taking money from health care or education.
