Dr. Imran Haque Is Excited For The Future Of Cosmetic Medical Procedures


Technology for cosmetic medical procedures continues to evolve. Though it may take at least five to ten years, robotic medical procedures have left the realm of science fiction and entered into reality. Differences in the amount of irradiation between manual and robotic procedures have always been high on the three-dimensional surfaces. In response to this, engineers have crafted robotic energy based devices that should benefit all cosmetic medical procedures going forward.

Recent studies show that invasive aesthetic procedures are generating over twenty-seven billion dollars every year, and many experts predict these rates will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of at least 4% over the next five years. Non-invasive procedures, by comparison, generate sixteen billion dollars per year, though their growth rate over the next five years is expected to be the same as the invasive procedures. Further, cosmetic surgery products generate 8.8 billion dollars of revenue annually, which is expected to be nearly doubled by 2022. Nonsurgical treatments classified into three primary categories: active cosmetics, injectable products, and energy based devices. These three categories make up the frequently requested procedures globally. Included in them are treatments such as dermal fillers, Botox, lasers, skin lightening, skin care and scar care products. Unsurprisingly, North America accounts for nearly half of the cosmetic procedures performed across the world, though this is likely more a result of their frequency in the United States than collectively in Mexico and Canada. The Asian market for skin-based treatments and products has seen an upswing recently, however, particularly in China.

Doctor Yongsoo Lee of Oh and Lee, a medical robot manufacturer, associates the ground breaking technology for cosmetic procedures to safe, efficient and better treatment methods. He believes that robotic guided cosmetic procedures can be an asset to any medical practice if enough in-depth research is completed. Specifically, continued research on the effects of irradiation parameters on patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes should improve the emerging technological advancement. This will contribute to progress in the laser medicine and surgery in the future, so doctors will see improved ways to care for their patients worldwide, and they will also be in a position to understand the influence of cosmetic procedure technologies on the lives of their patients. Dr. Lee was the man behind studies for laser beam radiation and laser beam emissions. Results gave strong indication that robot-guided treatment is more accurate compared to the human hand in laser irradiation. In this study, a series of several hundred shots using a robot arm were compared to that of a human controlled hand, which belonged to a skilled practitioner of laser surgery. The robot was notably more consistent in landing between the preordained margins of error than a skin-care doctor with over a decade of experience in the field. Furthermore, the added visual recognition of the prototype machine offset spatial recognition that normally requires a human touch to assess. This means that as the haptic capabilities of these robot parts improve in the future, so will the gap in efficiency and accuracy between it and manual procedures.

Dr. Lee presented these results in an April meeting held at the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, where he asserted that robotics will form a large part of the future for cosmetic treatment. He added that as an aesthetic dermatologist, he believes almost all doctors will react favorably to the capabilities found in robotic assistance, both as a means to save time so they can focus on other patients and procedures and as a means to perform their highly-technical tasks with far more precision. Essentially, his research showed that robotic procedures are faster and safer for patients.
