Angels Acquire Justin Upton From Tigers

 Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels did not look like they had any chance of making the playoffs one month ago. At that point, they had lost four more games than they had won. However, things can change a lot in one month in the world of Major League Baseball. The Angels went on to win 18 of their next 28 games to vault themselves into playoff contention. They are now only two games behind the Minnesota Twins for the second wild card spot. This is what caused Angels general manager Billy Eppler to make a move to improve the offense of his club. He sent a minor league prospect and a player to be named later to the Detroit Tigers for All-Star outfielder Justin Upton.

Justin Upton is one of the few players in baseball who has very high level skills in a number of areas. Here is a terrific defensive outfielder. He also has great power and speed. He will be an excellent addition to the Angels lineup that already includes baseball's best all-around player, Mike Trout. Angels manager Mike Scioscia has not commented where he plans to have Upton hit in the lineup. The Angels have been scoring more runs lately than they did earlier in the season. However, they are still not where they hoped to be. This is what made the trade for Upton such a necessity. Billy Eppler realized that the only way that his team is going to make the playoffs is if they score more runs.

The Tigers are now officially in a rebuilding mode. They also traded starting pitcher Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros for a package of three minor league players. The team has been very successful in recent years. They have made it to the playoffs four times in five years. However, they were not able to win the World Series. They lost the World Series to the San Francisco Giants in their one appearance during that period of time. Now the team is getting older. The Tigers payroll is one of the highest in baseball. Needless to say, the team was not living up to the lofty expectations of management or their fans. Therefore, it makes sense to shed the high salaries of Upton and Verlander and move in a different direction. The Tigers now have some financial flexibility to pursue a free agent after the season is over.
