Arizona Marijuana Company Buys California Town for $5 Million

The small town of Nipton, California seems set to become the state's unofficial marijuana tourism capital, at least if one business gets its way.

Late last week, Arizona-based cannabis company American Green Inc. announced that they had officially bought the town of Nipton for $5 million in hopes of transforming the tiny one-time mining community into a hotspot for marijuana tourism and cannabis-based industry. With an official population of just six people, Nipton has fallen on hard times in recent years following the collapse of the mining industry that used to support it. However, American Green hopes to turn things around for Nipton, while at the same time showing how marijuana tourism can be used as a model to help reinvent struggling small communities across the country.

Situated approximately one hour from Las Vegas and three hours from Los Angeles near the California-Nevada border, Nipton is set to undergo a complete transformation over the coming years. Upon purchasing the town, American Green announced that it plans on spending another $2.5 million over the next 18 months in order to improve Nipton's crumbling infrastructure.

The company's ultimate goal is to make Nipton a huge draw for marijuana tourists by building hotels, mineral baths, artists' programs, and of course, plenty of retail marijuana shops. The fact that recreational marijuana is legal in both Nevada and California means that Nipton's position near the border could be a huge benefit for both American Green and the town itself. In addition to the retail marijuana shops, the company also plans to eventually turn Nipton into a hub of marijuana cultivation and edibles production. As well, there are also plans to build a marijuana-infused water bottling plant.

However, simply transforming a once sleepy town into a marijuana hub isn't the only thing that American Grower is hoping to do. Instead, the company is focusing on 'eco marijuana tourism,' and has made sustainability and environmental responsibility a primary part of its plans. In fact, American Grower has already announced that the entire 120-acre town will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy in order to appeal to 'conscious cannabis consumers.'

Statistics show that the marijuana industry in the United States is already worth more than $6 billion a year and is predicted to grow to as much as $50 billion a year within the next ten years. For this reason, American Grower's president and CEO believes that the marijuana industry has the potential to help revive small communities in much the same way as the gold rushes of the 19th century did. Still, it remains to be seen whether the company will succeed in turning Nipton into the capital of marijuana tourism.
