Hyundai Fuel Cell SUV with 348 Mile Range Could be Launched by 2018: Reports

Hyundai could launch its second generation Fuel Cell SUV with 348 mile range could be launched by January 2018. Hyundai fuel cell SUV runs on hydrogen-powered fuel cells. The SUV will beat Toyota Mirai (currently with 312 miles) but will still fall short of Honda’s Clarity Fuel Cell vehicle which runs 366 miles in single charge. After running 348 miles, Hyundai Fuel Cell SUV will need hydrogen refueling. While Tesla is promoting electric vehicle technology, Hyundai and other automobile companies are looking forward to use other technologies as well. Hydrogen-powered fuel cell technology has been used by three major automobile companies and the latest news cements then notion that fuel cell based technology could be a game changer for automobile sector as well.

Hyundai’s fuel cell based SUV would be launched in January 2018 and the car is expected to be priced at $50,000. Hyundai is expected to showcase the SUV by mid of next year and we can expect the company to start bookings by third quarter. Considering rebates offered by government for green cars, the car could be priced in a competitive range by Hyundai.

The first generation Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell was launched 2014 and has been termed as an expensive choice by automobile experts. The second generation Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell could change the segment of fuel cell based vehicles. The report about Hyundai’s second generation SUV were first published by Nikkei.

The Nikkei report further informed, “Before it brings out a new hydrogen-powered vehicle, Hyundai will introduce a commercial fuel cell bus around the same time that Toyota brings out one of its own. Although not much is known about this new bus, expect a marketing rollout sometime in 2017.”

The report further added, “The new crossover SUV will boast 30% better millage than the existing entry, and adding a fuel cell bus will give the South Korean automaker a lineup to match the Japanese competition.”

In February 2013, Hyundai announced that it started production at Ulsan, South Korea Hyundai ix35 based FCEV's will be produced. In 2015 the production of 10,000 units started. The first 15 cars went to the hydrogen link network, Copenhagen and 2 to hydrogen Sweden, Skane. In 2015 vehicles were ordered or delivered in 11 countries in the EU and 15 countries in total worldwide.

The Tucson Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) is a test fuel cell vehicle for Hyundai's 2nd generation hydrogen fuel cell. The vehicle includes an 80 kW electric motor by Enova Systems of Torrance, California, UTC Fuel Cells by South Windsor, Connecticut, 152V battery co-developed by Hyundai Motor Co. and LG Chem in Seoul, Korea, 152 litres (33 imp gal; 40 US gal) hydrogen storage tanks developed by Dynetek Industries Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The vehicle has range of 300 kilometres (186.4 mi) and top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph).

Hyundai indicates an output of 100 kW (136PS) and a torque of 300 Nm. A tank contains 5.64 kg of hydrogen and should last for a range of nearly 600 km.
