Apple submits letter to NHTSA; sends strongest hint yet about ‘Project Titan’

In a recent letter submitted to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), tech biggie Apple has, for the first time, publicly addressed the autonomous car industry.

The letter submitted to the NHTSA by Apple underscores the company’s official comment on the federal government’s guidelines for automated vehicles. The guidelines were issued by the federal government last September.

The letter also marks Apple’s strongest hint thus far about its much-reported ‘Project Titan’ self-driving car project. Till now, the company has been extremely secretive about Project Titan, and has never officially disclosed its car plans.

In the letter to the NHTSA, Apple’s Steve Kenner – the company’s director of product integrity – has urged the government not to restrict testing of self-driving vehicles. In addition, Kenner has also commented on the US Department of Transportation (DoT)’s recently announced plans with regard to deploying “highly automated vehicles” in a safe manner.

In an apparent hint about Apple’s Project Titan initiative, Kenner has clearly mentioned in the letter that the company is “investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation.” Kenner also further added that Apple is “excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation.”
