Mars 2020 Rover: NASA Ready to Proceed with Rover’s Final Design and Construction

In a recent announcement, NASA revealed that its next Mars rover is all set for final design and construction. If everything goes on as per the agency’s plan, the Mars 2020 rover will start its journey to the Red Planet in the summer of 2020.

After the launch in 2020, the NASA rover will reach its destination in February 2021. Soon after reaching Mars, the rover will start exploring the planet in hope to find signs of life in the past. In addition, it will collect rock and soil samples for earth-based observations.

About the Mars 2020 rover, Geoffrey Yoder of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington said the mission is the first and an important step in a multi-mission campaign to collect samples from Martian surface and return them to earth for further studies. “This mission marks a significant milestone in NASA’s Journey to Mars – to determine whether life has ever existed on Mars and to advance our goal of sending humans to the Red Planet”, Yoder added.

NASA team in the Mars 2020 rover mission has decided to develop the rover using the same techniques used in Mars rover Curiosity, but with new and advanced scientific instruments. The decision has been taken to reduce the cost and risk of the rover, as per the team. The rover will also have a special instrument, called Mars In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE), which may help future astronauts by demonstrating how oxygen could be produced on the Red Planet using CO2 present in the Martian atmosphere.

The Mars 2020 rover will feature a subsystem to collect samples from Mars. These rock and soil samples will be sent back to earth for further studies. The samples will be studied in details by earth-based researchers to know past life on Mars.
